We make most of our knitwear in Aba, in partnership with a worker-owned cooperative we have collaborated with since 2019. The co-op employs 47 people, all of whom hold equity. Profits are distributed quarterly.
This is not a charity arrangement. The co-op is the most sophisticated production partner we have ever worked with. They run modern flat-knit machines, maintain ISO-certified quality control, and meet delivery commitments better than factories we previously used in Bangladesh and Vietnam.
The difference is not skill — Nigerian garment workers are world-class. The difference is investment. When workers own the business, the business invests in workers.
Next time you put on an Urban Threads tee, you are wearing a piece of that story.
